"This all started for us when we were in one of those down times in our relationship about 14 years ago. Valentines was quickly approaching and it didn't appear that we would have fun this year, just another day to hope it would pass quickly. I (Jim) was not looking forward to Valentines Day, so I thought how can I make this Valentines Day different without really having to talk to Julie. Because I knew if we started talking it would not end for four days. At least that's what my brain kept telling me.
We had just passed Christmas and had anonymously given a neighbor the 12 Days of Christmas and I thought why not do this with Julie for Valentines Day? It really wouldn't be anonymous but I wouldn't have to talk with her by giving her simple little gifts each day up to the big day, Valentines Day.
I started by giving some simple inexpensive food items with a red bow attached. I left them in very conspicuous spaces where Julie could easily find them. I didn't write a note or anything, just the bottle of juice, or can of nuts, and so on. Much to my surprise within four or five days I started finding gifts to me throughout the house. I was really surprised and to be honest excited that she was giving me similar gifts. Again they were anonymously given without a note, but I knew they were from Julie. They couldn't have been given by our young children.
relationship or a lifetime together. And what I realized is that over the next few years as we continued our simple 14 days of giving, we weren't having as many major relationship issues.
Being the financial penny pincher that I am I realized that a happy relationship is much less expense than an unhappy relationship which could ultimately escalate into attorneys fees and big bucks for both parties.
After sharing this with family and friends over the years we've heard similar comments of an increased respect and love for each other.
So here we are 14 years later and we're still playing the 14 Days of Valentines with each other. We look forward to this each year and continue to use the concepts of giving, sharing, complementing, showing respect, and loving one another.
Along the way we have learned many things about each other and relationships in general which we apply throughout the year with each other."
Like I said that was about 14 years ago and after that first 14 Days of Valentines our feelings for each other changed which also changed my feelings about talking in our relationship, but that's another story.
Now I know most people out there will say, not 14 days, one day is hard enough. But two weeks is a small price to pay for a year of a more fulfilling
